About Alison and Blue Funk Beat
Can you remember the last time you were genuinely happy? I’m not talking about the imaginary “fairy tale”-happy. You and I both know that doesn’t exist.
I’m talking about the “Man, did I have a good day!”-happy…“Wow, this is amazing!”-happy…the “I can’t believe how lucky I am!”-happy.
If you can’t remember the last time you were bubbling over about something really good in your life, you probably have lost touch with the joy of living.
And that is something I want to help you change. Right now.
Hi, my name is Alison Miller, and I started Blue Funk Beat to help women who are struggling with sadness or depression find their way back into the Light of joyful living. I have brought together everything I’ve learned over the past 35 years as a nurse and am working to find multiple ways of providing those resources, services, and products to those who are ready for a change.
Some of what I’ve learned has been through formal education. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) from Eastern Michigan University in 1983 and was inducted into Nursing’s Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau. Ten years later, I earned a Masters degree in psychiatric nursing (MSN) from the University of Illinois-Chicago, graduating first in my class.
During my career, I’ve worked on a cardiac step-down unit, for a disease management company, on a locked psychiatric unit, for a home care agency, on a huge retirement campus, and even did a couple of summers as a camp nurse.
But most of my work has been focused on treating people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and in 2004, I joined the Army Nurse Corps to help returning combat soldiers process what they experienced. After my discharge, I was recruited by Fort Carson (CO) to become their Psychiatric Nurse Consultant, working on issues such as mental resiliency and military suicide.
As vast as my professional development and career has been, it can’t compare to what I learned from my own personal experiences with heartbreak, sadness, loneliness and fear. Those were my real teachers.
I can hardly believe how much time I lost, stuck in that pain. I spent years lying to myself about being in pain, and because I believed those lies, I didn’t do anything to make my life better. Such a waste!
On top of that, in order to keep the lie alive in my head and not challenge it (for fear of needing to change), I stopped talking. I stopped talking about my thoughts, about my feelings, about my life in general. Even though I was actively running a household of 4, I dropped into an excruciating inner aloneness.
Let me tell you something:
Something terrible happens inside of you when you stop voicing your Truth.
You slowly disappear.
The essence of who you are shrinks and your soul begins to weep poisonous tears that erode your insides.
It took me years to put together all the little pieces that restored me to a life that was vibrant, healthy, and fun again.
Everything was hard. I had no guide that spelled out the things I needed to uncover my True Self, no road map to tell me how to get from there to here, no Yoda coaching me to “do!”
It took forever because I had to discover or invent each step myself.
But I DID do it! Eventually, through much trial and error, I climbed the steps out of the darkness and back into this glorious, amazing (sometimes scary) world! I now live with a sense of such gratitude, my heart overflows! I can’t believe how lovely it is to be fully alive!
So I think it’s safe to say if I can do it without much support or guidance, you ABSOLULTELY can do it WITH support and guidance!
You don’t need to go to nursing school to get the information you need, because I’ve already done that and can teach you the most important things to know about your physical health.
You don’t need to go to graduate school to gain deeper understanding of the human mind and spirit, because I’ve already done that and can coach you on how to reconnect with, strengthen and celebrate your inner Self.
You don’t need to spend decades talking to thousands of people suffering from depression, because I’ve already done that and can teach you life-changing lessons their experiences taught me.
You don’t need to join the Army Nurse Corps to glean the jewels of wisdom, insight, and courage one learns by being part of such an extraordinary organization, because I’ve already done that and can teach you how to think and act with greater determination and courage.
